Dbq on the Protestant Reformation free essay sample

The underlying causes that brought on the Protestant Reformation would be Martin Luther creating Lutheranism, Christians deciding to change their religion, discarding large parts of the Bible, and leaving the old authority of the Pope behind over indulgences. The Reformation had many causes but the top three would be, social, political, and economic. The political causes began over Nationalism, the Pope’s control resenting, a foreign ruler, and the protection of leaders. Both Protestantism and Catholicism became important in the formation of nationalism. Neither Protestants nor Catholics were patriots, but when a specific religion became identified with politics, religious feelings and patriotic feelings reinforced each other. Pope Boniface says that it is altogether necessary to salvation for every human to be the subject of the Roman pontiff, meaning that everyone who is not a full-fledged Catholic is damned. Economic causes began with tithe, indulgences, and the restriction on usury. In the bible it says that tithing/giving is intended to be a joy and meant for the lord. Indulgences are when people can pay off their sins so they would still get into the church. The reformers disagreed with indulgences because they saw it as a way for people to sin all they pleased but still make it into heaven. That isn’t being a true believer according to the reformers. The reformers condemned usury. Everybody else in this time forbid it, causing outbreaks and struggles with the church. Worldliness of clergy, simony, and nepotism were the social/cultural causes. Many Catholics were discouraged by worldliness and corruption in the church. Clergy often seemed more dedicated to the comfort and good living than to serving God. The popes often seemed more concerned with power and money than with God himself. These problems led to Catholics wishing to reform. Simony had mostly the same issues. Nepotism is the practice of hiring friends or family to positions even if outsiders might be better qualified. Although it may seem bad, it caused you to be a very trusty worthy person. Catholics saw this as a good sign to god. There were plenty things that caused the protestant reformation but when you look at it there were overall really only three. Social, political, and economic issues were the main things that caused the rise in the protestant reformation. Without these it might never have even happened.
